MORE THAN 400 VOLUNTEERS FROM GMAC MORTGAGE TO PARTICIPATE IN 2004 SUSAN G. KOMEN PHILADELPHIA RACE FOR THE CURE
HORSHAM, Pa. - May 7, 2004 - On Sunday, May 9, more than 400 people from GMAC Mortgage will participate in the 14th annual Philadelphia Race for the Cure to celebrate Mother's Day and help in the fight against breast cancer. GMAC Mortgage employees and their families, including 18 breast cancer survivors, will form the largest corporate team at Eakins Oval at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Participants will take part in the 5K run, 5K walk and one-mile fun walk to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Last Mother's Day, over 34,000 people raised $2.1 million in a single day for research, education, screening and treatment. According to the Philadelphia Komen Foundation, this year's goal is to raise $3 million and the estimated number of participants is 40,000.
This is the seventh consecutive year GMAC Mortgage has supported the Race for the Cure. Last year, about 250 participants from GMAC Mortgage attended the event.
"We are proud to be the largest corporate team this year," said Rick Gillespie, chief marketing officer of GMAC Mortgage. "It's been rewarding for us to see volunteers standing together on behalf of GMAC Mortgage to support the fight against cancer. We all have a reason to step up and join this good cause."
This year GMAC Mortgage team members will be among the most visible walkers at the race. Participants are walking with Race for the Cure t-shirts, pink GMAC Mortgage hats, and special GMAC Mortgage Race for the Cure buttons in dedication to three breast cancer survivors who are active members of the Philadelphia Komen Foundation.
Barbara Krawczun is one of 18 breast cancer survivors on the GMAC Mortgage team and among the 3,000 survivors to participate in the race. A mother of two children and vice president of GMAC Mortgage Capital Market Operations, she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago. "My family and I have been looking forward to this event," she said. "We are here to support each other and also to educate and empower women to take care of their health. In the fight against breast cancer, awareness can save lives."
